Diversity in the Learning Experience in (Higher) Education (DIV.ED)

The ERASMUS Multilateral Project “Diversity in the Learning Experience in (Higher) Education” / “DIV.ED” focuses on the complex topics “Diversity” and “acceptance”/”tolerance” applied to the academic learning context. Its main output is a university Module to be tested, implemented, evaluated and exploited in four partner countries (Austria, Germany, Lithuania and Portugal) before being disseminated and exploited Europe-wide in different educational environments – including (ICT-supported) informal learning.

For this purpose, DIV.ED relies on the 7 partner institutions’ strong networks as well as on the use of different, powerful dissemination and exploitation channels – like national broadcasting companies.

The DIV.ED project is based on the idea that the Diversity awareness is a crucial presupposition for a society which refers to and aims at social cohesion as well as educational and professional mobility. In tertiary level institutions, this requirement finds some punctual fulfilment at the level of contents in the concerned scientific publications. However, much more infrequent are the methodological applications implied in this issue. In general, the Diversity concept in the academic environment is at most subject of theoretical studies and a knowledge-based approach, hardly object of (self-)reflections on application in the learning environment – as if learning were “diversity neutral”. In particular, specific social groups unilaterally identified as “minorities” are not recognised as actors (protagonists) in the communication process. This can be extended also to different cases of social diversity (discrimination).

With the DIV.ED project, the partners aim to face the challenges provided by both the increasing global mobility and the recently observed, worrying tendency towards discrimination.
