Open Educational Innovation & Incubation (OEII) is a European project on the modernisation of education. The project ran from October 2010 until March 2013. During this time the playing field of open and online education changed dramatically with the success of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in 2012. “Open”, “innovation” and “education” are words that occupy a strong position in contemporaneous social and technological societies and that have undertaken deep changes during the recent decades. But the playing field of open and online education changed dramatically since the end of 2011. “The New York Times dubbed 2012 ‘The Year of the MOOC,’ and it has become one of the hottest topics in education since. As a consequence the project gain a lot of interest from experts and (European) associations in 2012. The project was by then in a critical phase assessing advanced cases in open educational innovation.
