UAb drives innovation and inclusion within OpenEU

Universidade Aberta (UAb) is playing a central role in advancing innovation and inclusion within the OpenEU Alliance through two complementary initiatives: the Think and Do Tank podcast and the Role Models campaign.

Produced and led by UAb, the Think and Do Tank podcast convenes leading experts from across Europe to reflect on how digital transformation is reshaping — and in some cases still failing to reshape — pedagogy, institutional practices and the student learning experience. The series places particular emphasis on identifying concrete actions and institutional conditions required for digital innovation to generate meaningful and lasting change in higher education. The opening episode highlights a key challenge for the sector: while digital technologies are rapidly being adopted, pedagogical innovation often lags behind. Core themes explored throughout the series include virtual mobility, institutional barriers to change, and the integration of artificial intelligence as a tool to support and enhance learning.

In parallel, UAb contributes actively to the implementation of the OpenEU Role Models campaign, which uses storytelling to amplify the voices of those transforming higher education. The initiative gives visibility to students, academics, researchers and staff whose experiences reflect values of openness, collaboration and inclusion, demonstrating the impact of digital, open and distance education on individuals and communities.

The campaign highlights four groups traditionally underrepresented in academia through authentic narratives that promote diversity, equity and a stronger sense of belonging:
