Pedagogical Model

In April 2026, the Open University will present an update to its pedagogical model, keeping pace with technological and educational evolution, incorporating new approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment, with a focus on the integration of Artificial Intelligence.

One of the changes introduced is the adoption of the name Open University Pedagogical Model, replacing the previous Virtual Pedagogical Model®. This change reflects the consolidation of Distance and Digital Education and values the pedagogical dimension.

The structuring principles are maintained—student-centeredness, flexibility, inclusion, accessibility, and interactivity—while new guidelines are introduced.

Among the main lines of development are:

the integration of Artificial Intelligence in teaching, learning, and assessment processes;

the strengthening of active learning methodologies;

the emphasis on competency-based learning;

the promotion of self-regulation and personalization of the learning path;

the restructuring of assessment models, with reinforcement of continuous assessment;

The introduction of new digital tools, such as the Open Notebook and LIA (Intelligent Connection to Learning);

The reinforcement of the usability and accessibility of digital learning environments.

Four areas of competence to be developed in students are also defined: critical thinking, creativity and innovation, collaboration, and communication.
