E-learning and the Virtual Pedagogical Model®

In April 2026, the Open University will present an update to its pedagogical model, keeping pace with technological and educational evolution, incorporating new approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment, with a focus on the integration of Artificial Intelligence.

One of the changes introduced is the adoption of the name Open University Pedagogical Model, replacing the previous Virtual Pedagogical Model®. This change reflects the consolidation of Distance and Digital Education and values ​​the pedagogical dimension.

The structuring principles are maintained—student-centeredness, flexibility, inclusion, accessibility, and interactivity—while new guidelines are introduced.

Among the main lines of development are:

  • the integration of Artificial Intelligence in teaching, learning, and assessment processes;
  • the strengthening of active learning methodologies;
  • the emphasis on competency-based learning;
  • the promotion of self-regulation and personalization of the learning path;
  • the restructuring of assessment models, with reinforcement of continuous assessment;
  • the introduction of new digital tools, such as the Open Notebook and LIA (Intelligent Connection to Learning);
  • the reinforcement of the usability and accessibility of digital learning environments.

Four areas of competence to be developed in students are also defined: critical thinking, creativity and innovation, collaboration, and communication.
