Students’ Mobility

Erasmus+ offers students the possibility of carrying out a period of study in a European Higher Education Institution (HEI), with full academic recognition, or a traineeship either in an HEI or in a European company.

1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle students can apply to an Erasmus+ mobility per study cycle. New graduates – up to 12 months after obtaining the degree – can also apply to an Erasmus+ traineeship.Participation modes are the following:Long-term mobility:

1. For studies, lasting 3 to 9 months, at a European university having an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with Universidade Aberta (Student Mobility for Studies – SMS);

2. For traineeship, lasting 2 to 12 months, at a company or organization, public or private, active in the job market or in the fields of education, training and youth (Student Mobility for Traineeship – SMT).

Note: It is possible to combine a study mobility with a complementary traineeship period.

Short-term mobility:

Exclusively for studies, lasting 5 to 30 days, at a European having an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with Universidade Aberta (Student Mobility for Studies – SMS).

Universidade Aberta’ students wishing to undertake an Erasmus+ mobility must have their fees settled.

As an Erasmus+ student, you can also apply for a mobility scholarship to support travel, accommodation and daily expenses arising from the fact that the study/internship period takes place abroad. 90% of this scholarship is attributed before the mobility. The remaining 10% are transferred after filling out the Erasmus+ report.

Students that apply for a mobility are automatically eligible to receive a scholarship.

Erasmus mobility can take place without the attribution of Erasmus+ funding, that is, with “zero scholarship”. In this situation, the student continues to benefit from all the conditions and rights of participation in the Program (that is, non-payment of tuition fees at the host institution and access to its services during the Erasmus mobility period).

The value of the scholarships is defined by the European Commission and by the Erasmus+ National Agency, according to the cost of living that divides countries into three groups:

Erasmus+ students receive free online language support (OLS) provided by the European Commission. Although not mandatory, students normally choose the language that will be used to study or intern.

This support consists of a language assessment test on the language of your choice, followed by the attendance of an online course to improve your knowledge of the foreign language. At the end of the mobility, the student needs to answer a final evaluation test.

The results obtained in the language tests have no impact on the mobility process.

Erasmus+ students are recommended to have travel and health insurances. On the case of health insurance, the European Health Card will be enough.

If it is an internship mobility, students are also required to have a civil responsibility and work accident insurance (covering damaged caused by the student at the internship location). This insurance is usually offered by the host institution, otherwise the student must be the one to subscribe to it.

Students are required to send to Universidade Aberta the declaration of arrival signed by the host institution.

At the end of the mobility students are required to fill out an Erasmus+ report and for that they will receive an automatic message.

Besides, students are required to send to Universidade Aberta the following documents:

  • Mobility for studies: declaration of departure and transcript of records (ToR) issued by the host university;
  • Mobility for internships: declaration of stay issued by the host institution and learning agreement for traineeships signed by the academic responsible at the host institution.

If a student fails one course unit, the equivalence at Universidade Aberta will not be attributed. In this case, the student can complete the course unit at the appeal and special periods after finishing the mobility period.

If a student fails all course units during the period of studies, the Erasmus+ scholarship has to be refunded.
