In Portugal the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas, awarded by foreign higher education institutions, is regulated by Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of 25 January.

Holders of a foreign degree interested in obtaining recognition should consult all the necessary information to formalize the requests on the website of the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES).

Special attention must be given to the type of request – automatic recognition; level recognition; specific recognition – as well as to the courses/institutions that offer study programs in the desired scientific area. The use of theDGES simulator may be helpful to identify the type of recognition best be applied to each situation.

The formal request has to be submitted by fulfilling the electronic form available at the DGES website.
