Cooperation and scientific, technical and cultural exchange with similar national and international institutions is one of the strategic areas of Universidade Aberta.
The completion of a mobility period within the scope of programs or bilateral agreements, is an opportunity for students to get to know the teaching method and study programs of other universities while obtaining equivalence to the studies carried out there.
The Mobility Program of the Portuguese-speaking Universities Association (AULP) is the first academic mobility program that exclusively covers the exchange of students between institutions in Portuguese-speaking countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor.
The Almeida Garrett Mobility Program is meant to encourage national cooperation between the High Learning Institutions members of the Portuguese Universities Council of Rectors (CRUP), offering students the possibility of completing a period of studies at a national host university, with full academic recognition.
The period of studies at a partner university is of one semester, according to the following conditions:
- 1st cycle degrees – from 2nd year onwards and as long as the student has already completed 60 ECTS;
- 2nd cycle degrees – from the first semester of the 1st year
The tuition referring to the mobility period is due at the institution of origin. There are no scholarships associated with this program, and as such, the inherent costs regarding accommodation and living costs are supported by the student alone.

In Portugal the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas, awarded by foreign higher education institutions, is regulated by Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of 25 January.
Holders of a foreign degree interested in obtaining recognition should consult all the necessary information to formalize the requests on the website of the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES).
